Is it difficult to use?

It is difficult to use if you are not following instructions. Despite my best efforts, I’m having a hard time figuring out how to use this thing. The instructions were clear for some of the steps but often left me confused about what I should do next. It’s easy enough to assemble, but once assembled it didn’t seem obvious how to put things in or take them out of the composting bin! And getting finished food out was an absolute nightmare too because my little “catchers” kept falling off and I couldn’t find any way to make them stay on…I

eventually had to resort to using ziplock bags which made it really awkward and unnatural because everything was sliding around inside while I tried (again)to get it out of the bin. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not strong enough to use this properly or what, but…well, it’s frustrating.

Why is a composter good for my kitchen?

It helps to reduce the amount of waste in landfills by turning kitchen scraps into natural fertilizer.

Compost is simply “rotted organic matter” or “dirt made with decomposing plant material”, which refers mainly to the rich brown, humus-rich, soil that forms when organic materials are broken down by microorganisms. Basically compost is fun for kids because it’s fertile, crumbly stuff that smells good and makes great mud pies! It’s highly valued because it can hold large quantities of water and it “amends soil.”

Environmentalists applaud composting with respect to reducing the number of garden products being put in landfills while at the same time increasing fertility in agricultural soils .

How much space does the compost bin need in my home?

It is usually a good idea to have a dedicated, large counter-space area for your compost pile.

Some people just do their small kitchen scraps in a covered container that they place alongside the sink. But if you plan to use any fruit or vegetable scraps, it’s handy to have a big space set aside specifically for your compost pile. A counter next to your stove with one corner removed or an island might work well. You could also create an open box – effectively turning it into a low table – and designating it as your composting station; this will make sorting easier because there’s less distance between things like eggshells and coffee grounds.

How often do I need to check the compost bin?

It’s important to not just cover your food with compost, but also cover the food with a layer of leaves or straw after a week. Turning the pile every few weeks will help ensure that it gets enough oxygen and doesn’t get too hot or cold.

If you have a type of composter where you add new layers from above, simply continue building up layers. It’s very important to keep all surfaces covered so there is no contact between the bacteria in the compost and air which can kill them off since they need both moisture and warmth to survive. Turning your piles after about six months will also help mature any remaining scraps instead of letting them rot for two years before being able to use them in gardens again.

Why are there holes in the bottom of the composter?

The holes in the bottom of the composter are designed to allow rainwater to seep inside, soak through the compost and ground up leaves, peat moss or lawn clippings below. This process causes them to decompose more quickly.

What is bokashi, and how does it work?

Bokashi, also known as “Bokashi composting” or “anaerobic fermentation,” is a process of decomposition in which microorganisms such as lactobacillus and acetobacter consume coffee grounds and plant waste. These microorganisms take up all the oxygen, so none remains for harmful pathogens like botulism bacteria to survive.

The resulting fermented coffee “compost” is rich in humic acids and nutrients, making it an excellent fertilizer for plants.

Many people who garden with Bokashi compost simply mix the fermented coffee grounds directly into their soil without any pre-processing steps. A couple of weeks after adding the fermented coffee to your organic garden, you can water your plants with “Effluent Water” or “Compost Tea” to ensure the coffee grounds are absorbed by your garden.
